Zidovudine (AZT) and other drugs used to treat HIV

Professor Brian Gazzard from the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital saw his first HIV patient in 1979. Soon after, hospitals around the world had an epidemic on their hands. By the early 1990s, AZT was being tested on patients.
