The evolution of surfing
A new book tracks down the visual history of surfing from its first recording in 1778, to today's global phenomenon. Cultural anthropologist Jim Heimann, editor of 'Surfing', has brought together 900 images that chart its evolution on and off the water, as a sport, a lifestyle and a philosophy. He spoke to Dan Damon about the role that photography played in capturing the images and the spirit of surfing.
