The Perils of Protecting Against Pirates

The task of the people on board the Seaman Guard Ohio was to protect some of the world's busiest shipping routes from pirates. On board were 10 crew members and 25 marine guards, all experienced former soldiers. Employed by a private company, they were dispatched to oil tankers and other vessels travelling across the Indian Ocean. Last month, though, after a case which has lasted more than two years, all of the ship's 35 crew and guards were sentenced to five years in jail by a court in Chennai, south-east India. They'd been convicted of possessing firearms. One of the men on board was Billy Irving, a former soldier in the British Army's Parachute Regiment. His fiancee Yvonne MacHugh spoke to Mike Johnson about the case.
