Did Tories overspend in three recent by-elections?

An investigation by Channel 4 News claims the Conservative Party exceeded the campaign spending limit in three recent by-elections, in Rochester and Strood, Newark and Clacton.

The campaign spending limit in by-elections is Β£100,000 per party, but Channel 4 News political correspondent Michael Crick said the investigation obtained "hotel bills from several of the hotels in each of those campaigns, and they are huge amounts".

He told Jo Coburn the Conservative Party is saying it complied with the law.

Guest of the day Ruth Davidson, leader of the Scottish Conservatives, said her party was "wholly autonomous" in Scotland, but added that her "colleagues down south do say they have declared everything as required".
