Conservative MP Grant Shapps has stood by his decision to resign as international development minister following claims he failed to act, when party co-chairman, on allegations of bullying in the party's youth wing.

Allegations of bullying, sexual assault and intimidation have engulfed the party since the apparent suicide of youth activist Elliot Johnson, who had claimed he was bullied by party youth organiser Mark Clarke. Mr Clarke denies all the allegations.

Speaking to the Daily Politics, Mr Shapps maintained it was "the right thing to do" to step down from his ministerial position, saying he did it for the Johnson family.

Commenting on the inquiry into the activists' death, Mr Shapps said "I hope we learn some lessons" and ensure there are "proper processes" and a "duty of care" in place.

He was speaking after a film on the programme showed the downfall of his ministerial career.
