This year pupils Cargilfield School in Edinburgh made cereamic poppies as part of a mural for Remembrance day. Inspired by the Poppies at the Tower of London, each of the 189 flowers represented a former pupil killed in the First and Second World wars.

The school, the oldest Prep School in Scotland, endured a shockingly high loss. In the early 20th century they had no more than 120 pupils, and in the First World War alone 126 were killed – an entire generation wiped out.

The flowers are part of a large frieze, which also includes plaster casts of today’s pupils with family connections to the fallen soldiers.
