"Saved by Sir Nicholas"

β€œIt was utterly extraordinary….that one man could have done so much…saved hundreds of lives and yet no one knew…”

In 1939, just before the outbreak of WW2, an unassuming stock broker from Maidenhead answered a call for help. He travelled to Prague and, in a matter of weeks, arranged the evacuation of almost a thousand Jewish children facing death at the hands of the Nazis.

The story of Sir Nicholas Winton is all the more remarkable because his efforts were completely unrecognised for more than 40 years. Now, he’s a national hero in the Czech republic, but here, in his home town, he remained largely unknown.

This year, on his 106th birthday, a group of the original children travelled to the Czech republic with ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ Radio Berkshire to tell the remarkable story from their perspective
