What role should religion play in public life?

Religious policy must be brought up to date with the less religious, less Christian and more diverse society in which we live, according to a report by the Commission on Religion and Belief in Public Life.

Commission chair Baroness Butler-Sloss spoke on the Today programme of the importance of a diverse religious "dialogue" in schools.

"It's extremely important that children in schools know what other people believe and what other people think," she said.

"It's dialogue, it's listening to other people and part of that can be done in a school assembly."
