The Welsh team saving lives in Namibia

Six doctors from Wales have spent two weeks in desert-like conditions in the southern African country of Namibia to help tackle a desperate shortage of anaesthetists and critical care expertise. Namibia has just a handful of qualified anaesthetists serving a population of more than 2 million over a huge geographical area - if they had the same proportion as Wales there would be more than 1,000 - meaning people die before getting treatment. The six Welsh anaesthetists ran an intensive training course with the University of Namibia as part of a Cardiff University project, led by Professor Judith Hall.
