Ark of Taste: Gravenstein Apples
Paula Shatkin has spent twenty years protecting the sweet yet tart flavour of the Gravenstein apple in Sonoma County, California. The Gravenstein has been part of the community’s way of life for generations and Paula wants to preserve this. She organises annual fairs and parades with banners informing the town that the Gravensteins are coming, as part of her mission to teach people to eat seasonally. However the apples are at risk of being replaced by more profitable vineyards. Dan Saladino explains the Gravenstein’s importance and why it needs protecting.
