Guantanamo Briton 'not getting hopes up'

The last British resident to be held at Guantanamo Bay has told the Victoria Derbyshire programme, via his lawyer, that he is "not getting his hopes up" about returning to the UK.

Shaker Aamer, 48, has been held in the military prison in Cuba since 2002 without charge or trial.

The US government announced last month that he would be released but Mr Aamer said there have been may "false promises".

In a transcript of his last conversation with his lawyer, he says the first thing he wants when he is free is a cup of coffee.

The following video is a reconstruction based on Shaker Aamer's own words.
