The Ark of Taste: The Rex Union Orange
Dan Saladino reports on a bittersweet fruit that has been brought back from the brink of extinction - the Rex Union Orange, a cross between a Sevile orange and a pomelo. The Rex Union was once prized throughout South Africa as a fruit perfect for marmalade making, but because it is not an eating orange the variety has been gradually overtaken by more commercial alternatives until only one orchard of Rex Unions remained. However, with local support and backing from The Ark of Taste, this orchard is now protected to ensure that this icon for South Africa lives on.
