Now 18, Mozart petitions his employer, the archbishop, to leave
Part three. The seeds of discontent.
In 1774, Mozart, now 18, was working as lead violinist in the archbishop of Salzburg's court orchestra. But with no opera, and no chance to excel as a performer, he soon wanted to leave.
"Most Sovereign Prince and Lord...The more talent children receive from God, the more obliged they are to use it. Such is the teaching of the Gospel. May your Serene Highness permit me to be released from service..."
