Early warnings about feeding animal derivatives to hervibivores went unheeded by the government and feed companies in the UK. Since the mid-1980s, 160,000 cattle have died of bovine spongiform encephalopathy, known as BSE or mad-cow disease. The problem is far from over. Who is to blame?
