Earthquakes - what are they and what do they tell us about our planet? Earthquakes happen when a line of weakness breaks in the earth's rock, known as a fault. The result is a huge release of energy. The ring of fire is the most earthquake-prone area of the planet, which explains why Japan has so many earthquakes.
