St Paul’s School, London: The Flying Ace
Indra Lal Roy was a pupil of St Paul’s School, Hammersmith when he joined the Royal Flying Corps, aged 18, in 1917.
In June 1918, he was posted to France and in a period of fourteen days he shot down nine German aircraft.
His short but remarkable flying career came to an end just a few weeks later. In July 1918, he was killed in action, during a dog fight with a German Fokker. He was 19-years-old.
Indra Lal Roy became the first Indian to win the Distinguished Flying Cross, which was awarded posthumously.
Indra Lal Roy is buried in France. His mother refused to have her son’s body moved to India because he had believed in the rightness of the cause for which he had died.
