On 13 June 1917, a bomb from a German Gotha aircraft hit the Upper North Street School in Poplar, east London.

Eighteen children were killed. The majority of the dead were aged between 4 and 6-years-old.

The deaths led to one of the biggest funerals the East End had ever known. Thousands of people lined the streets as the children were taken to their final resting place.

Fifteen of the dead were buried together in the East London Cemetery in Plaistow whilst three were interred in private graves.

Twenty German bombers were involved in the daylight raid on London on 13 June 1917. The Poplar schoolchildren were not the only victims. More than 150 people were killed in the capital that day.
