Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Proms in the Spotlight
Was there enough variety in the six highlight programmes of this year’s Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Proms? Plus, reactions to a profile of Somali singer Maryam Mursal by Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Witness.
This year the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ’s Proms – a string of classical concerts – has been brought back to the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ World Service after it was cut from the schedule five years ago. Highlights from the 76 concerts were brought to the global audience in six one hour broadcasts featuring every weekend. With this final instalment near, Rajan Datar hears how listeners from around the world both appreciated and questioned the coverage. Series producer Radek Boschetty discusses how the music was chosen and how cultural programming fits into the station’s remit.
The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Witness team are also joining the musical festivities as their programmes during the month of September have all been dedicated to musical stories. And, listeners have been singing the praises of their profile on Somali composer and vocalist Maryam Mursal – a stand-out singer from the 1970s.
