Bach: Prelude from Suite no. 1 for solo cello

J.S. Bach’s six Suites for solo cello are shrouded in mystery. We don’t know precisely when they were written, or for whom. Did Bach even hear them performed in his own lifetime? We simply don’t know!

What we do know is that we owe their rediscovery to the legendary Catalan cellist Pablo Casals, who found a copy of the suites in a secondhand music shop in Barcelona in 1889, of all places, and proceeded to reveal to the world the stature of these extraordinary pieces.

World-famous, Grammy award-winning cellist Yo-Yo Ma has been playing Bach’s Cello Suites for decades and he brings his inimitable questing spirit and extraordinary musicianship to bear on some of the greatest music ever written for any instrument.
