Is the army in danger of going soft?

The Chief of the General Staff has unveiled a plan to crack down on bullying and sexual harassment in the ranks.

General Sir Nick Carter launched a new leadership code at Sandhurst military school on Thursday, asking hundreds of his senior men and women to be more inclusive and respectful of others no matter what their race, gender, or sexuality.

But some critics within the armed forces are asking what's the point of soldiers if they are not rough?

Sima Kotecha put that question to Gen Sir Nick Carter, who said the new code was about the army projecting the right standards.

β€œThere is a risk that we will lose sight of our ultimate goal which is to close with and kill the Queen’s enemies,” said Sir Nick.

β€œBut equally, we cannot accept unacceptable behaviour because that undermines our values and standards and that’s the basis on which teamwork functions.

And in combat the team is what matters.”
