West End, London: Boosting Morale with Entertainment
George Robey was born in Herne Hill in 1869 and became one of the countryβs best loved music hall comedians.
He was known for many years as the Prime Minister of Mirth and was one of Londonβs top entertainers during World War One.
In 1916, Robey starred in βThe Bing Boys Are Hereβ, which featured songs such as βIf You Were the Only Girlβ (in the World).
Throughout the war he was involved in fundraising for charities such as St Dunstanβs, raising money for wounded soldiers.
In 1954, George Robey received a knighthood. He died later that year.
