Victoria Embankment Gardens, London: Imperial Camel Corps Memorial
The Imperial Camel Corps was raised in 1916 in order to fight in the deserts of the Middle East and Africa.
The 1,100 camel-mounted infantrymen of the Camel Corps fought in places such as Sinai and Palestine, and in the Arab Revolt.
The majority of the Corps’ members came from Britain, Australia and New Zealand.
The Imperial Camel Corps was disbanded in 1919. Whilst many of the camels continued to work, others were consumed.
The memorial to the Imperial Camel Corps was sculpted by Cedric Brown who was himself a member of the corps.
The memorial was unveiled in Victoria Embankment Gardens in 1921.
