The NHS has launched a wide-ranging review of maternity services across England after a damning report about how failures at a Cumbrian hospital led to the unnecessary deaths of 11 babies and one mother.

There is currently a similar review taking place in Scotland. Northern Ireland has recently concluded a review and there are no plans to have a national review in Wales.

Around 700,000 babies are born in England every year and having a baby is the most common reason for being admitted to hospital in England.

Over a third of all clinical negligence claims received last year by the NHS in England relate to maternity care.

Naga Munchetty spoke to the chair of the review, Baroness Julia Cumberlege and Sarah Noble who is a consultant midwife sitting on the review team. They were joined by several parents who told of their own experiences with maternity care including Bob Moran who documented his experience through cartoons.
