How big a problem is racism in the classroom, and what can be done to combat it?

Supply teacher Sagheer Afzal and Laura Pidcock, from Show Racism the Red Card, discuss.

Supply teacher Sagheer Afzal said he's often been the target of racial abuse. Moreover, he said that senior management in schools have discouraged the reporting of such incidents.

'I was racially abused and punched in the ribs by a student and I was unofficially told by a senior member of staff that it would be better not to report it.'

Laura Pidcock is education manager at Show Racism the Red Card. 'We need to look at the drivers behind these racist ideas. In order to shift attitudes, we can't just say "that's racism".'

'We need to be asking young people to think critically.'
