Khaled Fahmy, professor of history at the American University in Cairo, considers the development of the idea of Arab nationalism. He sets it against the collapsing Ottoman Empire - once a multi-ethnic, multi-racial, multi-linguistic empire stretching across Asia, Europe and north Africa - which was reduced to two ethnicities by the end of the 19th century, Turks and Arabs.
