Calais migrant problem: ‘Lorry drivers need more support’

Lorry drivers passing through the French port of Calais are struggling to remove would-be asylum seekers trying to smuggle themselves into the UK in their trucks, a report by the Victoria Derbyshire programme has found.

A number of drivers told the programme’s Catrin Nye that they felt unsafe, as some would-be asylum seekers carry knives to help cut through soft coverings on their vehicles.

The drivers face fines if illegal migrants are found on their trucks by border security staff.

Keith Vaz MP, Chair of the Â鶹ԼÅÄ Affairs Select Committee 2010-2015, Natalie Chapman of the Freight Transport Association and the Conservative MP for Thanet South, Craig Mackinlay, joined Victoria to discuss the problem.
