Five months later, Nina is still awaiting a decision. Over 35,000 people in the UK had pacemakers fitted last year, a third more than we fitted 10 years ago. So the question of whether they might need to be turned off at some point is likely to become more common. Jennifer Tracey looks at what UK law says about all this and under what circumstances someone can choose to have an implanted heart device switched off.
