Billy Gowin’s Story
Billy Gowin from Tonbridge has fond memories of VE Day.
As an 11-year-old, not only was he feasting on sandwiches and cakes at a street party, but there was a surprise guest. Billy’s brother, Ted, was in the Royal Engineers and had been captured and held as a prisoner of war in Eastern Germany.
However on VE Day, Ted suddenly turned up at the family home to an emotional reunion. Billy says it was the only time he had ever seen his mother cry.
