Peter Barron: 'Google can be a difficult partner'
Google's head of communications for Europe Peter Barron says the company are making Β£100 million available to support innovation in newspapers.
"We will seek genuinely innovative ideas that have viability and potential for impact and then we will decide which ones deserve the funding," he said.
The fund is part of a Google drive to help publishers with product development, support innovation and to support training and research.
Barron responded to criticisms of Google's impact on newspapers and some publishing group's decision to not take up the fund.
"As a tech company we don't necessarily have connections and relationships with the wider environment and sometimes the criticism has been that we operate in isolation... and sometimes we can be a difficult partner to work with," he said.
