With more than one million patients seen every day, the NHS is more than just a health service – it is part of the fabric of British life.
It regularly features among the top reasons people feel proud to be British, leading to a broad consensus among political parties to protect it. Yet no other developed country has chosen to copy it – and it is not cheap to support.
