Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex: Training Kitchener’s Volunteer Army

In the summer of 1914, the small fishing town of Shoreham-by-Sea was home to one of the largest coastal training camps in the country.

Young men from all backgrounds and from right across the British Empire assembled at Shoreham. Aspiring young writers, musicians, artists and even a celebrity boxer rubbed shoulders in the training trenches and at the practice rifle ranges.

Today, the A27 Shoreham bypass carves its way through the fields where 100,000 men once trained for trench warfare and prepared for the battlefields.

Actor Brian Capron tells the story of this small fishing town’s vital role in World War One.
