Vaisakhi
An amazing 100 000 people attend the Vaisakhi parade which Simranβs dad is organising in Birmingham. Thatβs many more than fit into Wembley stadium. Not only Sikhs come to this procession. Christians and Muslims can join in too if they want. Over 1500 volunteers help to make the 3 Β½ mile long parade happen smoothly. Of course there is food at the end of the parade. Huge marquees and places for everyone to sit and share langar are part of what needs fixing up. Itβs not just about Sikhs being out on the street, as Simran says: βVaisakhi starts before sunrise. We replace the Sikh Flag the Nishan Sahib, for another year. Then we spend time praying and listening to readings from the holy scriptures, the Guru Granth Sahib.β These personal and spiritual parts of the festival matter as much as the walk through the streets. It is time to remember old stories, share fun times with friends and family and think about the year to come.
