Writing lyrics for a musical theatre production
We see Rebecca Applin, a musical theatre composer, explaining how the lyrics for the musical I Know Me were created with the young people who performed in it. We see her leading a workshop with a group of school children. Together, they create lyric lines for the middle section of the song So Angry, after talking about the things that personally make them feel angry. Students are encouraged to sing the musical phrase they’re creating the lyrics for, and share the things that make them feel angry. On-screen captions show how series of words are broken into syllables to fit the notes of the phrase from the song. Students are encouraged to fit their lyric ideas to a backing track of So Angry.
