During World War One, if a lorry used tyres, if soldiers used tubes to drain trenches, or sailors needed rubber sheeting; then most likely the rubber came from the Avon Rubber factory at Melksham in Wiltshire.

So important was the output of the factory that the Ministry of Munitions, took over production. Staff worked directly for the Government.

In November 1917, King George V visited the site and was impressed by what he saw.
