IS bulldozing archaeological site a 'horrific crime'

Archaeologists and officials have expressed outrage about the bulldozing of the ancient Assyrian city of Nimrud by Islamic State militants in Iraq.

Dr John Curtis president of the British Institute for the Study of Iraq told the programme of the city's importance.

He said the site was 'very impressive' and losing it would be a 'horrific crime' as it is the best preserved Assyrian site in Iraq.

Dr Curtis added that military force should be use to defend sites of historic interest when needed.

"Ideally one would like to see United Nations sending task forces...to look after these places," he said.
