Al Jazeera journalist Peter Greste, who was imprisoned in a jail in Egypt for 400 days, said he coped by approaching it as a matter of "principle" to de-personalise the experience, to make it "mean something".

"We came to understand that this fight wasn't just about us, the charges were aimed directly at us but we saw this as a struggle on behalf of press," said Mr Greste.

Two of Peter Greste’s colleagues , still in the prison, are facing a re-trial on Monday 23 February on charges of assisting the Muslim Brotherhood and spreading 'false news'.

The three journalists have been the subject of international protests about their treatment by the Egyptian authorities.
