Is success fuelled by hard work, luck or coffee?

Two friends discuss the journey from disadvantage to success.

Two friends discuss the journey from disadvantage to success. Animated by Dan Templeton.

It was the style of this conversation between longstanding friends, rather than the theme, that attracted animator Dan Templeton. Was it luck or a love of coffee that brought them to where they are today?

Miguel and John originally recorded this conversation for The Listening Project in November 2013. Dan Templeton, a recent graduate at the Bristol School of Animation at the University of the West of England, decided to animate it for his portfolio development.

He describes the process: "The theme of them talking about coffee gave me the idea to set the scene in a small cafΓ© at a table and their way of conversation really helped me come up with a large amount of ideas for showing body language and expression in the character animation."

"I drew inspiration from The Ricky Gervais Show for the style of animation, as I wanted it to be really simple and no complicated movements especially in the scenes with lip sync. For the initial character designs, I took inspiration from Burt and Ernie from Sesame Street because of their contrasting facial features."

"Hearing the voices in general also helped me as a guide as to how I should animate the characters and how to pace the film in the editing. For example, when they talked about when they saw coffee for the first time and living in a council house, I showed cutaways of flashback memories of the characters when they were young and also showed typography."
