The Short, Magazine Lee Enfield rifle was the standard weapon used by the majority of British, Commonwealth and US soldiers during World War One.

The Lee Enfield took its name from its designer James Lee and the factory where it was produced: the Royal Small Arms Factory in Enfield.

The first Lee Enfield rifle was made in 1895 and the last in the 1950s.

The Royal Small Arms Factory was thought to have one of the best apprenticeship schemes in the world with a reputation for excellence.

The Lee Enfield was built to last. Many of the weapons made for World War One are still in use today.

The Royal Small Arms Factory closed in 1988.
