Do modern feminist campaigns only benefit an elite few?

Baroness Alison Wolf, professor of public sector management at King's College London, has argued that feminism today does little to serve the majority of women.

She told Today's Sarah Montague: "Campaigns which are supposedly going to benefit women generally ...actually really do nothing for the vast majority of women."

"Two obvious ones would be the campaign to get a minimum of 30% of women on the boards of big companies and also the obsession with all-female shortlists."

However, writer and broadcaster Bidisha said she didn't "recognise this vision of feminism as a whole".

She said: "What's so exciting about the women's movement now is that it's being fuelled by a groundswell of real grassroots protest."

"It's not about just women on boards ...it's outrage about things like rape, domestic violence, sexual harassment, cuts to legal aid and public services."

First broadcast Today programme 14 January 2015.
