Culture secretary on diversity in the media

The Culture Secretary Sajid Javid has said he doesn't think there are enough people from black and ethnic minority backgrounds on TV and in the media in the UK.

His comments came during an interview with guest editor Lenny Henry on Radio 4's Today programme.

Asked if he thought there were enough people from a background like his on TV and radio he said "no I don't".

But the culture secretary rejected the idea of a clause in the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's next charter to ensure that a certain number of posts are filled by people from an ethnic minority.

Sajid Javid said he believed it was "not that easy", adding that such a measure could lead to "tokenism" in recruitment in the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ and commercial media companies.

First broadcast Today programme 30 December 2014.
