Inside the Kolkata slums set for destruction
Dan Damon talks to photographer Souvid Datta about the Kolkata slums set to be destroyed to make way for new developments. The Panditya and Gorcha Bastis on the Southern outskirts are home to over 400,000 people. The slums are special economic zones for the poor - recycling, textiles and manufacturing with an estimated $150m annual output. Within the next 2 years the Kolkata Municipal Authority aims to enact a redevelopment plan which will see the slums demolished and replaced with high-rise and commerical buildings. Thousands will lose their homes and it's not clear where they will be rehoused.
