Glenbranter, Scotland: Harry Lauder and The Laddies Who Fought and Won

PA27 8DJ

During the First World War, Harry Lauder played a hugely significant role and used his global fame to recruit thousands of men for the war effort. He also established the Harry Lauder Million Pound Fund to help the war injured and in 1919 he was awarded an honorary knighthood for his contribution to war effort.

However, Sir Harry experienced great personal tragedy when his only son, Captain John Lauder of the 1/8th Battalion Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders was killed during the last months of the Battle of the Somme. He erected a memorial in memory of his son near the family home on the Glenbranter Estate in Argyllshire.

Ricky Ross met up with Harry Lauder historian Archie Foley to discover the song that Sir Harry Lauder would forever associate with the loss of his son.
