High Cross, Hertfordshire: First Double Victoria Cross Recipient

Lieutenant Colonel Arthur Martin Leake was the first man to receive two Victoria Crosses (VC).

Only three VC and Bars have ever been awarded.

After his early training as a surgeon, he worked at the district hospital in Hemel Hempstead. He received his first VC for the bravery he showed in the South African war.

During the first Battle of Ypres, his tending of the wounded close to enemy trenches led to him being given a bar to his Victoria Cross.

He died in 1953 at his home at High Cross near Ware. His faithful dog Waif was found by his side. Waif was re-homed following an appeal by the Royal Army Medical Corps.
