Goldstone Ground, Brighton: From the Football Field to the Battlefield

Bob β€œPom Pom” Whiting was an outstanding goalkeeper of his generation. His career flourished at Brighton until the outbreak of war in 1914.

Along with a dozen of his Albion teammates, β€œPom Pom” joined the Football Battalion and went out to France a year later.

In need of medical care in 1916, he returned to a military hospital in Brighton but deserted to be with his pregnant wife. He was arrested and found guilty, but with the army short of men for the Arras Offensive, his punishment was suspended.

What follows is a tale of love, courage and lies.

ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ football commentator Johnny Cantor tells the extraordinary story of Bob β€œPom Pom” Whiting’s war.
