Market Hotel, Heanor: Renaming The King of Prussia Pub

At the outbreak of war the principal pub in Heanor was the King of Prussia on the town’s market place. A few weeks after the start of the conflict at a meeting of the Heanor Tradesman’s Association they highlighted the name and it’s connotations now that Britain was at war with Germany/Prussia.

They decided to write to the brewery, Hardys, to express their concerns. Three weeks later at Heanor Magistrates Court there was an application to change the name for β€˜patriotic reasons’.

The magistrates in allowing the change of name congratulated the brewery for its wisdom. It was renamed the Market Hotel and remains so today.
