Litir 306: Ceit Eilidh
Anns an Litir mu dheireadh, bha mi ag innse dhuibh mun dotair ann am Poll I霉bh ann an Siorrachd Rois o chionn timcheall air ochdad bliadhna. 鈥橲 e Miss Rees a bh鈥 oirre, agus 鈥檚 e am fear a bha ga moladh ann am b脿rdachd 鈥 Iain Dubh Mac Dh貌mhnaill 鈥檌c Iain, a bhuineadh don sg矛re ach a bha a鈥 fuireach ann am Brisbane, ann an Astr脿ilia. Co-dhi霉, chan e Miss Rees a-mh脿in a bha comasach air leigheas a dh猫anamh air duine bochd aig an 脿m ud, a r猫ir na sgr矛obh Iain. Sgr矛obh e 貌ran do bhrochan.
Bha Coinneach Cemp agus a bhean, Ceit Eilidh, a鈥 fuireach anns an sg矛re. Thug iad cuireadh do dh鈥橧ain agus a bhean beagan l脿ithean a chur seachad c貌mhla riutha. Bha Coinneach agus bean Iain c脿irdeach do ch猫ile. Air a鈥 chiad oidhche, ge-t脿, dh鈥檉h脿s Iain tinn le fuachd. Cha robh c脿il aige airson bracaist agus bha e uile gu l猫ir trom-inntinneach. Smaoinich e air cur a dh鈥檌arraidh an dotair.
Ach an 脿ite sin, chuir Ceit gu leabaidh e, chuir i plangaidean air, agus thug i brochan dha. Anns a鈥 mhadainn air an l脿rna-mh脿ireach, bha Iain sl脿n fallain a-rithist. Bha e a-riamh a鈥 cumail a-mach gur e am brochan a rinn an leigheas air agus sgr矛obh e 貌ran mu dheidhinn. Seo beagan dheth:
Am brochan luachmhor milis a fhuair mi bho Cheit Eilidh,
Chuir e fuachd air theicheadh fad鈥 a-mach 脿 m鈥 fhe貌il.
Brochan bean Mhic Chemp, a鈥 bhean 脿lainn ch貌ir,
Chuir e fuachd gun d脿il dh矛om, 鈥檚 tha mi sl脿n gu le貌r,
Brochan bean Mhic Chemp, a鈥 bhean 脿lainn ch貌ir.
Bha e sl脿inteil s霉ghar, thug e neart is l霉ths dhomh,
鈥橲 chuir e spionnadh 霉r a-steach nam ch霉islean bre貌it鈥.
Brochan bean Mhic Chemp, a鈥 bhean 脿lainn ch貌ir,
Chuir e fuachd gun d脿il dh矛om, 鈥檚 tha mi sl脿n gu le貌r,
Brochan bean Mhic Chemp, a鈥 bhean 脿lainn ch貌ir.
D猫 tha brochan a鈥 ciallachadh an seo? Bidh cuid a鈥 gabhail brochan air porridge. Ach, anns a鈥 cheann a tuath, 鈥檚 e lite a chanas daoine mar as trice airson porridge.
Ann a sin, tha brochan, nuair a thathar a鈥 bruidhinn air biadh co-dhi霉, a鈥 ciallachadh thin gruel 鈥 stuth air a dh猫anamh le min-choirce agus uisge goileach. Agus tha Iain a鈥 cumail a-mach gun do rinn sin an leigheas air.
Bha mi airson a bhith cinnteach mu dheidhinn sin agus chaidh mi don fhaclair dhualchainnteach aig Roy Wentworth nach maireann. Bha Roy mion-e貌lach air G脿idhlig Ghe脿rrloch. Agus tha am faclair aige a鈥 dearbhadh gur e lit a chanas muinntir na sg矛re sin ri porridge.
An d猫idh uisge m貌r trom a dh鈥檉h脿gas an talamh bog fliuch, canaidh muinntir Ghe脿rrloch mu dheidhinn leas air c霉l an taighe, 鈥渢ha e cho fliuch, tha e coltach ri poit lit.鈥 Tha e cho fliuch, tha e coltach ri poit lit.
Agus seo agaibh seanfhacal 脿s an sg矛re sin, anns a bheil lite air ainmeachadh. Ma tha sibh fireann, 貌g agus gun fheusag, tha mi an d貌chas nach gabh sibh dragh. Ged a tha feusag ormsa, chan eil mi ag r脿dh gu bheil mi ag aontachadh ris an t-seanfhacal! Co-dhi霉 seo e: Lite gun salann is balach gun fheusag, an d脿 rud as bliaine a th鈥 ann. Lite gun salann is balach gun fheusag, an d脿 rud as bliaine a th鈥 ann.
Uill, nuair a tha mi ag r脿dh nach eil mi ag aontachadh ris, tha mi ag aontachadh gu tur ris a鈥 chiad ph脿irt. Cha chuirinn lite gun salann faisg air mo bheul. Ach lite le salann 鈥 is, feumaidh mi aideachadh, si霉car donn 鈥 chan fhaighear nas fhe脿rr!
Faclan na seachdaine
Abairtean na seachdaine
extremely knowledgeable.
Abairtean na seachdaine: 鈥橲 e Miss Rees a bh鈥 oirre: she was called Miss Rees; chan e X a-mh脿in a bha comasach air leigheas a dh猫anamh: it wasn鈥檛 only X that was capable of healing, curing; beagan l脿ithean a chur seachad c貌mhla riutha: to spend a few days with them; dh鈥檉h脿s Iain tinn le fuachd: John became unwell with a cold; bha e uile gu l猫ir trom-inntinneach: he was extremely low in spirits; smaoinich e air cur a dh鈥檌arraidh an dotair: he considered sending for the doctor; bha e a-riamh a鈥 cumail a-mach: he always maintained; chuir e fuachd air theicheadh: it caused the cold to flee; fad鈥 a-mach 脿 m鈥 fhe貌il: far from my flesh; chuir e fuachd gun d脿il dh矛om: it put the cold from me without delay; thug e neart is l霉ths dhomh: it gave me strength and energy; min-choirce agus uisge goileach: oatmeal and boiling water; tha mi an d貌chas nach gabh sibh dragh: I hope you won鈥檛 get annoyed; cha chuirinn lite gun salann faisg air mo bheul: I wouldn鈥檛 put porridge without salt close to my mouth; feumaidh mi aideachadh: I must admit; chan fhaighear nas fhe脿rr: better will not be got (ie you can鈥檛 beat it!)
Puing-ch脿nain na seachdaine
Puing-ch脿nain na seachdaine: chan eil mi ag r脿dh gu bheil mi ag aontachadh ris an t-seanfhacal: I am not saying that I agree with the proverb. Are you comfortable with the t- in front of seanfhacal here? Do you recognise it as the dative singular case, following the simple preposition ri? It is important to try to get this correct as ris an seanfhacal, with the 鈥渟鈥 sounded rather than the 鈥渢鈥 sounds wrong to the ear. Basically the rule is that if the (singular) noun following the preposition starts with an 鈥渟鈥, it is preceded by a t-. The exceptions to the rule are where the s is followed by one of four consonants, and they are easy to pick 鈥 they are the ones where it is virtually impossible to make the sound of a 鈥渢鈥 followed by that consonant ie sg, sm, sp or st. Thus while we say anns an t-sr脿id, or air an t-slaod, we would say anns an sgoil (not an t-sgoil), air an sp霉inneadair (not an t-spuinneadair) and 脿s an st猫isean (not an t-st猫isean).
