Vine in 1914: Great Britain Goes To War With Germany

On 4 August 1914, Great Britain declared war on Germany.

Britain had been reluctant to get drawn into what had been called β€˜a Balkans quarrel’, and only days before the declaration, peace protests were being held in London.

By announcing the declaration, Britain committed itself to taking part in the world’s first industrialised β€˜total’ war, which lasted for more than four years, and was one of the deadliest conflicts in history.
