D-Day 'one of the greatest achievements of history'
Max Hastings, historian and author of Overlord: D-Day and the Battle for Normandy 1944, explained the events that led to D-Day
"The 6th June 1944 was the decisive moment of the 2nd World War in the west. The last moment at which Hitler could have just conceivably have turned the tide against the allies," said Mr Hastings.
"It was one of the great romantic adventures of history and its success was one of the greatest achievements of history".
