Warmley Broadcasting Corporation
Composer Daniel Jones recalls some of the games that he and Dylan Thomas played in Warmley (the Jones’ family house in Swansea) in their early teens. He remembers them setting up the ‘Warmley Broadcasting Corporation’ in the house using a doctored radiogram. After this Daniel, his father and Dylan all did ‘broadcasts’. Daniel and Dylan performed plays, poetry and somewhat surprisingly music compositions played on piano and a series of dilapidated instruments. They developed a writing technique which caught on in the house of saying words backwards (eg September becomes Rebmetpes), which Thomas of course revisited in later life with Llareggub in Under Milk Wood. They also invented composers with crazy names for whom they wrote biographies. From an interview with Bernard Keefe for ‘Fortissimo Jones’ broadcast in 1977.
