Decline of the Kardomah Gang
Gwen Watkins, fellow Swansea poet Vernon’s wife, discusses how friendships between Dylan Thomas and other members of the Kardomah Gang diminished, as he got better known in the early 1950s. She was not impressed with what she calls ‘instant Dylan’, a characterisation of Dylan that grew over time. Fellow Kardomah Gang member Alfred Janes, an artist, remembers a final trip to Laugharne to see Dylan not long before his last trip to the USA. Dylan had said that he was only going to ’pay the bills.’ The final meeting of the Kardomah Gang was at Dylan’s funeral in late November 1953. From ‘Catalysts – The Kardomah Boys’ in 1997.
